The Department of Motion Pictures produces narrative and documentary features as well as a variety of short-form and series work, with a focus on ambitious, cinematic, and emotionally resonant storytelling.
Over the years, members of the DMP have produced BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, PATTI CAKE$, the experiential fireworks documentary BRIMSTONE & GLORY (National Board of Review-cited as one of 2017’s best), the documentaries of Bill and Turner Ross (TCHOUPITOULAS, the Tribeca award-winning CONTEMPORARY COLOR, the Sundance award-winning WESTERN), the Vimeo season of HIGH MAINTENANCE, and projects in collaboration with David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, and Kerri Walsh Jennings, and with outlets including ESPN, NBC, Fox Sports, and Time Inc.
The company premiered two projects at Sundance in 2018: Reinaldo Marcus Green’s debut feature MONSTERS AND MEN, which won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Outstanding First Feature, and Sam Green’s live documentary A THOUSAND THOUGHTS.
The DMP was formed in 2015 out of the Court 13 collective (which went on to become Court 13 Arts, a New Orleans based arts non-profit). Before that, the DMP’s founding members worked in new media for the 2008 and 2012 Obama campaigns.
